The Atlantic Herring Advisory Panel (AP) held a conference call on May 31, 2012 to elect a Chair and review Addendum V to the Interstate Fisheries Management Plan for Atlantic Herring for Public Comment (Addendum V).

The Interstate Fisheries Management Program (ISFMP) serves as the core of decision-making, where species management boards establish regulations to conserve fishery resources, supported by an active participation framework. The ISFMP Policy Board oversees this, monitoring stock performance and policy implementation with representation from all member states and several federal agencies.

The Atlantic Herring Technical Committee (TC) convened via phone conference on October 9, 2007. This conference was initiated because the ASMFC and NMFS have different TAC specifications for Area 1A (ASMFC 50,000 mt; NMFS 45,000 mt) and Area 3 (ASMFC 55,000 mt; NMFS 60,000 mt) for the 2008 and 2009 fishing seasons.

This conference was in response to the Atlantic Herring Section tasking the TC to give feedback advice for an addendum to achieve the goals of the following motion. Move to initiate an addendum (Addendum I) to include the following: – Monthly or bimonthly quotas with payback and carry over; – Determination of landing and fishing days; – No fishing prior to June 1; – Timely reporting of state registered landings; – and Restriction on harvest of juvenile fish

The Spiny Dogfish Technical Committee (TC) met to review Draft Addendum IV to the Interstate Fishery Management Plan for Spiny Dogfish for Public Comment (Draft Addendum IV) and provide feedback to the Spiny Dogfish & Coastal Shark Management Board (Board) regarding the proposed measures.

The Advisory Panel (AP) met on May 17, 2012 in Yarmouth, ME. The two main agenda items were (1) review the advisory panel membership; and (2) discuss next steps for northern shrimp management.
