The Interstate Fisheries Management Program (ISFMP) serves as the core of decision-making, where species management boards establish regulations to conserve fishery resources, supported by an active participation framework. The ISFMP Policy Board oversees this, monitoring stock performance and policy implementation with representation from all member states and several federal agencies.

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s (Commission’s) Atlantic Herring Advisory Panel met in Taunton, MA on January 6, 2015 to discuss Draft Amendment 3. Currently, the Atlantic Herring Plan Development Team (PDT) is developing Draft Amendment 3 for three proposed issues listed below. The Section will be considering the draft amendment for public comment at its meeting on February 3, 2015. The PDT worked with the AP to assess the socioeconomic impacts on each of the proposed issues. Prepared for Draft Amendment 3 to the Atlantic Herring Fishery Management Plan

One of the options contained in the amendment is the possible opening of part or all of Closed Area II (CAII) on Georges Bank to mobile gear. This task is similar to a task in 2012, which examined a lift in the prohibition on mobile gear in Closed Area II. The TC convened a call on December 29, 2014 to discuss possible consequences to lobster of opening the closed area to mobile gear. Below is a summary of their discussions.

The ASMFC Northern Shrimp Technical Committee (TC) held a conference call with northern shrimp industry members on December 16, 2014 to clarify recommendations for obtaining winter research samples from the trap fishery. The ASMFC Northern Shrimp Section (Section) requested this review to determine how the TC’s recommendations for obtaining trap-caught samples in the November 12, 2014 memorandum compare with options suggested during the Section’s December 16, 2014 conference call.
