Fisheries Management
The Interstate Fisheries Management Program (ISFMP) serves as the core of decision-making, where species management boards establish regulations to conserve fishery resources, supported by an active participation framework. The ISFMP Policy Board oversees this, monitoring stock performance and policy implementation with representation from all member states and several federal agencies.

The Shad and River Herring Technical Committee met via two conference calls to review the following sustainable fishery management plans (SFMPs) for American shad. On September 11, 2017 the TC reviewed the plan updates for North Carolina, Potomac River Fisheries Commission, Connecticut and a limited bycatch allowance proposal from Virginia. On October 3, 2017, the TC reviewed plan updates from South Carolina and Georgia.

The Horseshoe Crab Technical Committee conducted a survey of American eel and channeled whelk fishermen along the US Atlantic coast. The intents of this survey were to: a) characterize the preference, prevalence, and performance of horseshoe crab as bait in these fisheries, b) provide information on the relative amounts and costs of horseshoe crab bait use that could be used to assess the viability of manufactured baits with reduced amounts of horseshoe crab, and c) provide information on the fishery’s current impression of manufactured baits.

The Advisory Panel (AP) met in-person on October 26, 2017 to formulate comments on Draft Amendment 3 and provide recommendations on the 2018 fishery specifications.
