The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission has initiated benchmark stock assessments for spot, Atlantic croaker, and red drum to be completed in 2024. The goals of the assessments are to evaluate the health of stocks along the Atlantic coast and inform management of these species. The Commission’s stock assessment process and meetings are open to the public, with the exception of discussions of confidential data. The Commission welcomes the submission of data sources that will contribute to the goals of the assessments. This includes, but is not limited to, data on growth, maturation, migration, tagging, natural mortality, environmental impacts, abundance/biomass,…
Benchmark Stock Assessment Meetings
A meeting held during the development of a specie’s Benchmark Stock Assessment. Benchmark stock assessment development includes three types of workshops and a peer review. These workshops are open to the public and are guided by defining clear goals, products, and individual responsibilities for the participants involved. Arlington, VA – The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s American Eel Benchmark Stock Assessment will be peer-reviewed over several dates in late November and early December (November 28 and 30; December 1 and 5), via webinar. The benchmark assessment explored several new approaches for American eel, including a delay-difference model and some trend analyses, and developed an egg-per- recruit model. Additionally, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted a pilot assessment of the ability to use a GIS-based habitat analysis to inform eel stock assessments. The Stock Assessment Subcommittee also explored several index-based methods for determining stock status and providing catch advice.…

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Red Drum Simulation Assessment will be peer-reviewed from March 28-30, 2022. The Simulation Assessment will evaluate multiple candidate models using simulated data sets to identify the model best suited for tracking red drum population dynamics. Once a preferred model is identified, it will be used in future benchmark assessments to provide advice to the Sciaenids Fishery Management Board on red drum management. The Review Workshop is open to the public and will be held at the DoubleTree Brownstone Hotel, 1707 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, North Carolina. The Workshop agenda can be found here. The Simulation…
