The Technical Committee met during TC meeting week in Providence, RI, on October 24, 2003.

The Spiny Dogfish Technical Committee met with the Mid-Atlantic and New England Fishery Management Council’s Spiny Dogfish Monitoring Committee on September 10, 2003 in Baltimore, Maryland to set the specifications for the 2004-2005 fishing year. The Monitoring and Technical Committees reviewed the results from the 37th Stock Assessment Workshop and evaluated the status of the stock prior to recommending the annual quota and possession limits for the 2004-2005 fishing year.

The technical committee agreed that to maintain consistency with EPR baseline model runs for Area 1, and with the last stock assessment, that it was necessary to update fishing mortality runs using the same techniques used in the last stock assessment (Delury generated, blended MA & NMFS, abundance weighted F’s).

The Herring Plan Development Team (PDT) met jointly with the ASMFC Herring Technical Committee (TC) on May 1, 2003 in Mansfield, MA to review the results of the recently-completed Transboundary Resource Assessment Committee (TRAC) Meeting and develop recommendations regarding the specifications for the 2004 fishing year (January 1 – December 31, 2004).

The Spiny Dogfish Technical Committee held a meeting on April 23, 2003 in Warwick, RI to address the Board’s charge. The purpose of the meeting was to reexamine Dr. Rago’s and Dr. Pierce’s methodologies for determining the appropriate quota for the 2003-2004 spiny dogfish fishery. The methodologies were evaluated to determine if a constant fishing mortality rate of 0.03 could be achieved.
