The Coastal Sharks Technical Committee (TC) held a conference call to discuss the proposed 2016 fishery specifications, the final rule for Amendment 6 to the Atlantic Highly Migratory Species (HMS) Fishery Management Plan, review the Atlantic smooth dogfish (smoothhound shark) stock assessment, review the proposed rule on HMS Amendment 9, and recommend a species for the 2018 SEDAR benchmark stock assessment.

The TC estimates a 28.2% reduction for coastal states and a 21.4% reduction for Chesapeake Bay states/jurisdictions, and a 25.6% reduction overall. The enclosed report details the TC’s harvest reduction estimate for 2015 utilizing final state regulations.

The Atlantic Herring Technical Committee (TC) met via conference call to discuss the content of an upcoming Section presentation at the ASMFC Summer Meeting and to review the Trimester 2 catch to date.

The Striped Bass Technical Committee (TC) met via conference call and webinar to discuss (1) ongoing board tasks, (2) the development of fleet-specific fishing mortality reference points, and (3) to discuss the timeline for the stock assessment update which is scheduled for review by the Board at the annual meeting in November.

The Atlantic Sturgeon Tagging Working Group (TWG) met via conference call to discuss potential tagging models for the 2017 Atlantic sturgeon benchmark stock assessment, and data needs for those models.

The Northern Shrimp Technical Committee (NSTC) met via webinar and conference call to discuss the results of the 2015 winter test tows, to discuss progress with the 2015 stock status update and assessment model development, and how to set specifications under Amendment 3 without an approved stock assessment model for management use.

The Atlantic Striped Bass Technical Committee (TC) met on March 24, 2015. The agenda included a request from Virginia for the TC to review two proposals: 1) changes to the current Virginia striped bass tagging and monitoring program and, 2) studies to calculate calibration factors for the seine nets used by Maryland and Virginia for the striped bass juvenile abundance index in the Chesapeake Bay.
