The Shad and River Herring Technical Committee (TC) met via conference call to review the draft river herring stock assessment update.

At the May 2017 Coastal Sharks Management Board meeting, the final rule for federal Amendment 5b was presented by NOAA Fisheries Highly Migratory Species (HMS) Division. Amendment 5b implements a range of management measures to prevent overfishing and rebuild overfished dusky sharks. These measures are based on the 2016 dusky shark stock assessment update that determined dusky sharks are overfished and experiencing overfishing. The Board was asked to consider cooperative research with NOAA Fisheries to improve estimates of dusky (and other) sharks caught in state water fisheries. The Coastal Sharks Technical Committee (TC) held a conference call to discuss.

The Stock Assessment Subcommittee met to discuss preliminary results of trend analyses and emerging issues. SAS members agreed with a April 7th deadline for circulating preliminary results of all trend analyses to the full SAS.

The Shad and River Herring Technical Committee (TC) met via conference call to review sustainable fishery management plans (SFMP) from Florida (shad), Georgia (shad) and South Carolina (blueback herring).

The Tautog Technical Committee and Stock Assessment Sub‐Committee met in Arlington, Virginia to review the preliminary options for alternative management measures that will be included in Draft Amendment 1. The TC analyses are in response to the Tautog Management Board’s request for the TC to evaluate consistent management measures across each region: Delaware‐Maryland‐Virginia (DelMarVa); New Jersey‐New York Bight (NJ‐NYB); Long Island Sound (LIS); Massachusetts‐Rhode Island (MA‐RI). A summary of the options that have been (or will be) prepared are below.

At the Winter Meeting, state‐specific harvest reduction analyses were presented to the Tautog Board. The Board voiced interest in an alternative harvest reduction analysis, whereby states within a region would have consistent management measures. The Technical Committee (TC) was subsequently tasked with evaluating consistent management options within the regions of Long Island Sound (LIS), New Jersey‐New York Bight (NJ‐NYB), Delaware‐Maryland‐Virginia (DelMarVa). The TC met via conference call to review the regional tasks assigned by the Tautog Board.

The Shad and River Herring Technical Committee (TC) met via conference call to review sustainable fishery management plans (SFMP) from Maine (river herring), New York (river herring) and the Delaware River Basin Cooperative (shad). In addition, Florida presented a habitat plan for shad.
