Alexandria, VA – The Spiny Dogfish & Coastal Sharks Management Board approved the initiation of two addenda to address the distribution of the spiny dogfish annual quota among the states. This action responds to the concern of some states that the current seasonal allocation program is not providing their commercial fishermen the opportunity to harvest the available quota as was intended by the Interstate Fishery Management Plan (FMP) for Spiny Dogfish. Currently, the interstate spiny dogfish management program allocates the annual commercial quota both seasonally and regionally. The seasonal allocation system divides the quota into two periods, with 57.9% of…

ASMFC Spiny Dogfish Board Revises 2006/2007 Quota and Sets Specifications for 2007/2008 Fishing Year
Atlantic Beach, NC – The Commission’s Spiny Dogfish and Coastal Shark Management Board approved changes to 2006/2007 quota and trip limits, and set specifications for the 2007/2008 fishing year. The Board modified the 2006/2007 fishing year (May 1, 2006 – April 30, 2007) specifications by increasing the quota to six million pounds, with 58% of the quota allocated to states from Maine through Connecticut and 42% allocated to New York through North Carolina. States were given the prerogative to set their own trip limits. For the 2007/2008 fishing year (May 1, 2007 – April 30, 2008), the Board approved a…

Atlantic Beach, NC – The Commission’s Atlantic Herring Section today voted to reduce the amount of herring available to the fishery for 2007-2009 in Area 1A, an inshore region off the coasts of Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The total allowable catch for Area 1A is now set at 50,000 metric tons. The Section committed to review stock status annually to determine if quota adjustments are necessary. The specifications are consistent with those recommended by the New England Fishery Management Council to NOAA’s Northeast Regional Administrator in late September 2006. The table below outlines the Commission’s final herring specifications for…

Arlington, VA – The Commission’s Tautog Management Board approved the development of Draft Addendum IV to the Interstate Fishery Management Plan for Tautog. The Draft Addendum will propose the establishment of new biological reference points (target and threshold limits for biomass and fishing mortality) to define stock rebuilding goals. This action is taken in response to the findings and recommendations of the 2006 peer-reviewed stock assessment, as well as those of the recently updated virtual population analysis (VPA). Both assessments indicate the tautog resource continues to be at low biomass levels. Since the mid-1980s tautog has undergone a substantial decrease…
