The workshop aims to cover 2 objectives:

  • Develop a flexible and practical guide for vessel calibrations and gear changes that could work for fisheries-independent trawl surveys operating on the U.S. East Coast
  • Determine how to adjust for differences in the data caused by new vessels/gear

To meet these objectives, the workshop will be split into 3 topics over 3 days with a variety of sub-topics that were of particular interest:

Vessels

  • Ideas on how to calibrate new vessels with limited funding
  • Best practices on how to handle extended or periodic vessel outages or delays
  • Addressing the use of multiple vessels by a survey

Gear

  • Calibration of various gear types (ex: Uses of net mensuration systems to monitor consistencies in net geometry while conducting surveys, options for conducting paired sets, etc.)
  • Species-specific calibration factors vs aggregated species selectivity ratios

Analysis/Data

  • Review of software/statistical packages to assist with analysis and/or draft code
  • Review of existing vessel calibration studies and conclusions (e.g., ratio estimators vs MLE, etc., minimal sample size determination)
  • Approaches to generate a consistent time-series of data when paired tows have not been conducted (e.g., VAST).

The end goals are as follows:

  • Create a list of best practices for vessel and gear calibrations
  • Create a reference document for analysis after a gear change/vessel change has occurred
  • A reference folder of common vessel calibration and gear change literature
