Arlington, VA – The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission has initiated a benchmark stock assessment for Atlantic migratory group cobia to be completed in 2027. The goals of the assessment are to evaluate the health of the stock along the Atlantic coast from Georgia northward to inform management. While updating the stock assessment model and datasets used in the 2020 benchmark stock assessment (SEDAR 58) will be considered, additional data sources and potential new models will also be explored due to data limitations and changes in management. Highland Street, Suite 200 A-N, Arlington, VA. The stock assessment will evaluate the health of Atlantic croaker stocks and inform management of this species. This document summarizes the 2025 Stock Assessment Updates for the Gulf of Maine (GOM) and Southern New England/Mid-Atlantic (SNE/MA) winter flounder stocks. Both assessments revise the 2011 Benchmark Stock Assessments that were peer-reviewed by an independent panel of scientific experts at the 52nd Northeast Regional Stock Assessment Workshop/Stock Assessment Review Committee (SAW/SARC 52) meeting. These assessments reflect the latest and best information available on the status of the two winter flounder stocks for use in fisheries management.

This assessment of the Southern New England Mid-Atlantic Winter Flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) stock is a management track assessment update of the existing benchmark assessment (NEFSC 2011), and follows management track updates in 2015, 2017, 2020, and 2022. In each assessment since the benchmark, except for 2022, the stock was overfished, but overfishing was not occurring (NEFSC 2015, 2017, 2020, 2022). In the 2022 management track, stock status changed to not overfished due to a change in the recruitment stanza used to calculate biological reference points.
