This report updates the status of the Atlantic coast weakfish stock using new information developed by the stock assessment subcommittee. Past assessments have indicated a deterioration in the stock with increasing fishing rates and declining catches (Vaughan et al. 1991, Seagraves 1992).

The ASMFC winter flounder Technical Committee met June 1-2, 1993 to review new data and to standardize methods for quantifying measures for compliance with the Plan target of F30 which states must implement by Jan 1, 1995. The Committee met again in August to review each states proposed management strategy for achieving F3O.

In this report, the current status of 15 river herring stocks located between New Brunswick, Canada, and North Carolina was assessed with long-term commercial catch-effort, age composition, fishing mortality, and relative population abundance data.

In this study, we used the Shepherd stock-recruitment (S-R) model to estimate maximum sustainable yield (MSY) and the maximum sustainable fishing rates (Fmsy) of 12 Atlantic coast shad stocks with long-term commercial catch-effort, age composition and mortality data.
