The Fisheries Science Program delivers this through a rigorous, peer-reviewed stock assessment process, utilizing a mix of fishery-independent surveys and fishery-dependent monitoring, complemented by research from coastal state, federal, and academic institutions. The program also focuses on developing innovative scientific methods and enhancing state stock assessment capabilities, while coordinating and expanding collaborative research and data collection efforts.

The 2023 benchmark stock assessment for Jonah crab provides the most recent information on the status of US Jonah crab stocks. The assessment is the first of US Jonah crab stocks and was peer-reviewed by an independent panel of scientific experts through the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s external review process.

This assessment of the Summer flounder (Paralichthys dentatus) stock is an update of t he existing 2021 Management Track Assessment (NEFSC 2022). Based on the previous assessment the stock was not overfished and overfishing was not occurring. This 2023 Management Track Assessment updates fishery catch data, research survey indices of abundance, the ASAP assessment model, and biological reference points through 2022. Additionally, stock projections have been updated through 2025.
