The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Atlantic Herring Management Board members from Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts met September 19 via webinar to set effort control measures for the 2024 Area 1A fishery for Season 2 (October 1 – December 31).

The Interstate Fisheries Management Program (ISFMP) serves as the core of decision-making, where species management boards establish regulations to conserve fishery resources, supported by an active participation framework. The ISFMP Policy Board oversees this, monitoring stock performance and policy implementation with representation from all member states and several federal agencies.

The TC met via webinar on September 23, 2024, to review updates to the Sustainable Fishery Management Plans (SFMPs) for river herring from New Hampshire and Maine, as well as updates to the SFMPs for American shad from Massachusetts and Connecticut. The Maine and New Hampshire updates also included proposals to change and reopen their fisheries, respectively.

The Northern Shrimp Section (Section) met in Portland, Maine to review the public comment summary and Advisory Panel (AP) input on the Public Information Document (PID) for Draft Aendment4, provide direction to the Northern Shrimp Plan Development Team (PDT) on the development of Draft Amendment 4, and review AP and Technical Committee (TC) discussions regarding an industry-based research program.

Amendment 3 requires states and jurisdictions to develop sustainable fishery management plans (SFMPs), which are reviewed by the Technical Committee and approved by the Board, in order to maintain commercial and recreational fisheries beyond January 2013.
