ASMFC Northern Shrimp Section to Meet to Consider Next Steps in Amendment 4 Development

Advisory Panel & Technical Committee to Discuss Industry-Based Research Program

Arlington, VA – The Commission’s Northern Shrimp Advisory Panel (AP) and Section (Section) will meet on September 12 and 13, respectively, at the Doubletree by Hilton Portland, 363 Maine Mall Road, South Portland, Maine. The AP will meet with the Technical Committee on September 12 (1-4 p.m.) to further discuss options for an industry-based research program which could inform management decisions. The AP will also review public comment and provide input on the Public Information Document (PID) for Amendment 4 to the Interstate Fishery Management Plan (FMP) for Northern Shrimp. These meetings will be in-person only.

The Section will meet September 13 (9 a.m. – Noon) to review public comment and AP feedback on Amendment 4 PID and direct staff in the development of Draft Amendment 4, which will consider the establishment of a new management approach that would allow for the setting of a multiyear moratorium. The moratorium could be modified when a set of biological indicators shows the northern shrimp stock is at a population level that could to support a sustainable fishery. The Section will also review AP and Technical Committee discussions regarding an industry-based research program.
