Fisheries Management
The Interstate Fisheries Management Program (ISFMP) serves as the core of decision-making, where species management boards establish regulations to conserve fishery resources, supported by an active participation framework. The ISFMP Policy Board oversees this, monitoring stock performance and policy implementation with representation from all member states and several federal agencies.

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) Atlantic Herring Section met on January 25, 2006 in Providence, Rhode Island with the primary purpose of approving final management measures for Amendment 2 to the Interstate Fishery Management Plan (FMP) for Atlantic Herring.

This Addendum replaces the biological sampling program in Section 3.0 of Amendment 4.

In evaluating the 2003 proposal, members expressed concerns that the proposal included mixed stocks, included pound nets where, presumably, the bycatch could be released unharmed, had the potential to harvest a substantial number of fish, and had the potential to impact other stocks that are under intensive restoration. The 2005 proposal addressed none of the concerns expressed by the TC in 2003.
